Gardner House Museum – #110

The Gardner House Museum, an architectural marvel, is elegantly captured in a detailed ink drawing.

This Second Empire-style house, built in 1875, showcases a three-story structure with a distinct mansard roof.

The drawing highlights intricate features such as the symmetrical fenestration pattern, a one-story wood porch with a hipped roof, and elaborate brackets adorning the eaves and porch. The concave mansard roof, finished with multi-color slate lozenges, is punctuated by projecting gables, wall dormers, and ornate verge boards.

The museum is open on weekends during the summer and features five rooms furnished as a nineteenth-century home, with the remaining rooms hosting rotating exhibits. Owned by the Albion Historical Society, the Gardner House serves as both a museum and the society’s headquarters.

From the historical marker on S. Superior St. in Albion, Michigan: Augustus P. Gardner (1817-1905), a wealthy hardware merchant, built this Victorian-style house in 1875. This thirteen-room mansion with a mansard roof was Gardner’s home until his death in 1905. After decades of neglect, the Albion Historical Society purchased and restored the house in 1966.

This artwork, available as prints and cards, beautifully preserves the historical essence and architectural grandeur of the Gardner House. The meticulous lines and shading in the drawing convey a sense of timeless elegance, reflecting the artist’s dedication to capturing this historic landmark in all its splendor.
