The tradition of adorning Christmas trees with candles dates back to 16th-century Germany.
In those early days, people would attach candles to the tree branches using melted wax or pins to illuminate the tree throughout the night.
While this created a beautiful spectacle, it also posed a significant fire hazard. However, despite the risks, the tradition of lighting Christmas trees with candles persisted and was considered an essential part of holiday celebrations. One artwork that captures this tradition depicts a stunning Christmas tree from the 19th century, adorned with real candles. The scene includes various gifts, such as a tricycle and a horse-drawn buggy visible through the window. The presence of the parents’ portrait and a gas lamp adds to the warm and cozy ambiance of the image. Additionally, the multi-color oval rag rug under the tree enhances the inviting atmosphere of the scene.
