Afternoon Ride, Mackinac Island – Cat #103

Summers on Mackinac Island were refreshingly cool for visitors from the Chicago and Detroit areas. A different pace of life was enjoyed, with the main events of the day being dressing for formal meals and outings. This pen and ink drawing by Maggie LaNoue captures a charming scene of a carriage ride around the island. Fort Mackinac, a historic military outpost, stands prominently in the background.

The ladies’ attire, with long dresses, hats, and parasols, indicates a late 19th to early 20th-century setting. Parasols were commonly used to shield from the sun while maintaining a fashionable appearance. The inclusion of men in suits and hats further supports this time frame.

Horse and buggies were the primary mode of transportation over a century ago, and remarkably, they remain so on Mackinac Island today. While the dress code has relaxed in most areas of the island, the historical charm is well preserved.

Automobiles are still not allowed on the island, preserving its historic charm. This artwork, catalog number 103, reflects the timeless appeal of Mackinac Island. Collectors and history enthusiasts will appreciate this detailed depiction of a leisurely afternoon ride.

Matted giclée prints and notecards of this piece are available, making it a wonderful addition to any collection of Michigan art. This piece is part of the Mackinac Island series by Maggie LaNoue and fits perfectly in a collection focused on historical transportation.
