Arch Rock, a natural limestone arch on Mackinac Island, stands as a testament to both geological wonder and historical significance. Formed during the post-glacial period, this rare type of formation in the North American Great Lakes region has intrigued people for centuries. Native Americans revered Arch Rock as a place of numinous power, weaving many stories and legends about its mysterious presence.

When Euro-Americans arrived, they viewed Arch Rock more as a geological curiosity. The art by Maggie LaNoue captures a moment from this era, where small figures, likely early visitors, pose atop the arch for a photograph. Interestingly, while the figures initially appear to be all men, closer inspection reveals some women adorned with feather hats, a nod to the fashion of the time.

Arch Rock’s allure contributed significantly to the establishment of Mackinac National Park in 1875 and Mackinac Island State Park in 1895. Today, it remains a highlight for visitors, who are drawn to its unique beauty and historical importance. Climbing on Arch Rock is no longer permitted to protect its structural integrity, but a platform allows guests to get close and take in its grandeur.

This piece is part of the Mackinac Island series. Matted giclée prints and notecards by Michigan artist Maggie LaNoue are available. The Mackinac Island series showcases the rich history and natural beauty of this beloved destination.
