The Legend

The Mackinac Bridge, one of the earliest drawings by Maggie LaNoue, was created in the 1980s using India Ink with technical pens. This iconic structure, which opened in November 1957, links Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. The name “Mackinac” originates from the Indian word “Michilimackinac,” meaning “island of the great turtle.”

Michigan lost its bid to acquire a seven-mile strip of land, including Toledo, when in 1837, President Andrew Jackson signed a bill awarding the disputed territory to Ohio and granting Michigan the land north of the Straits of Mackinac instead. Despite numerous financial and physical challenges, the Mackinac Bridge was completed, symbolizing the spirit of Michigan—a spirit adventurous, unafraid, respectful of the past, and eager to embrace the future.

The Mackinac Bridge stands as more than just a significant engineering feat; it is a testament to the resilience and determination of Michigan’s people. Governor G. Mennen William established the tradition of the governor leading the annual “Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk” across this monumental bridge. This artwork is a proud addition to the Mackinac Island series, celebrating Michigan’s rich history and engineering marvels.
