The Legend

This distinctive mini print captures the elusive morel mushroom, revered in Michigan and beyond for its rich, earthy flavor and rare appearance. With a honeycomb-like cap—its network of ridges and pits unmistakable—this edible ascocarp has long captivated both gourmet chefs and adventurous foragers. Particularly cherished in French cuisine, morels bring a sense of occasion to any meal.
In Michigan, the joy of the hunt is just as satisfying as the culinary rewards. Morel season typically peaks in May, with some appearing as early as late April and lasting into June. Ideal hunting grounds include hardwood forests and especially areas that have experienced recent burns—where morels are known to flourish. State lands in Michigan welcome foraging without a permit when it’s for personal use, making this tradition accessible to many.
Caution is part of the foraging experience: morels have toxic lookalikes, including the dangerous false morel. Accurate identification is essential. Guided walks and field guides are excellent ways to learn safely.
This artwork honors not only the morel itself but the quiet thrill of a walk in the woods and the hope of spotting one of nature’s finest treasures.
