The Legend

The artwork captures a serene winter scene of the National House Inn, now a bed and breakfast, in Marshall, Michigan. The inn, originally known as Mann’s Hotel, was formally opened on New Year’s Eve of 1836, marking the occasion with the first ball ever held in the village.
Managed by local lawyer Prentiss S. Hewitt, this event was the first of many, including a “Soiree De Dansante” in April 1836 and an Independence Day celebration on July 4, 1836, featuring tables adorned with roast pigs and wine bottles.
In 1837, Andrew Mann leased his hotel to Volney S. Allcott, who renamed it the National House. It quickly became a central hub for the Lower Village and a headquarters for the Democratic Party. Stagecoaches regularly stopped at the hotel, and horse barns were situated on its south side. Today, this historic building continues to serve its original purpose as a bed and breakfast, preserving its rich history and charm.
The drawing style is delicate and detailed, using soft lines and muted colors to depict the snowy landscape and the historic brick building. The white snow contrasts beautifully with the red bricks, highlighting the inn’s architectural features. Lamp posts and a small decorated Christmas tree add a festive touch to the peaceful winter setting, making the scene nostalgic and inviting.
