One of the oldest buildings on campus, the Albion College Observatory was completed in 1884.
This iconic structure was initially funded and designed by Dr. Samuel Dickie, who later became the college president.
The observatory housed classrooms, faculty offices, and an astronomical observation room. Its most notable feature is the original telescope, an Alvan Clark & Sons eight-inch refractor, which remains in use to this day.
During World War I, the observatory served as barracks for the Army. Over the years, it also housed a bookstore and the West Michigan Methodist Conference archives.
The building’s design includes a solid brick pier that reportedly contains more bricks than the rest of the structure combined, providing a stable base for the telescope.
In 1985, the Albion College Observatory was recognized as an official Michigan historical site, highlighting its significance in the field of astronomy and education.
Today, it serves as the home of Albion’s Honors Institute, continuing its legacy of academic excellence.
This tinted pen & ink artwork by Maggie LaNoue beautifully captures the observatory’s historical essence and architectural charm. Albion College Observatory, cat. #182C.
